Answer engine optimization
Mostly SEO with better answers, and when it is worth paying for.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content easy for AI answers to use and cite, in Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants. For most small companies it is ordinary SEO plus pages written to be quoted, and it is rarely worth buying as a separate package before the basics are in place.
What is different from SEO
SEO tries to earn a position in a list of results. AEO tries to be the source an answer is built from, when there is no list or the list is a footnote. The goal changes the editing, not the foundation:
- The answer comes first. Open each page, and each section, with the answer to the question in its heading, then the detail.
- One question per page. A page that answers a single buyer question clearly is easier to quote than a general "Our services" page.
- Facts are stated plainly and the same way everywhere. Name, services, location, pricing ranges and limits should not contradict each other across your site and your profiles.
- Claims have sources. Link primary evidence and date what you publish.
None of that is exotic. It is the part of good SEO that happens to matter most when a machine reads the page for you.
What the models told us
On 16 October 2026 we asked ChatGPT (GPT-5.4) and Perplexity (Sonar Pro): "What is answer engine optimization and how is it different from SEO? Is it worth a small company paying for it?" One run each, web search on, through DataForSEO's API.
Both gave the same answer to the second half. For a small company, paying for a standalone AEO package first is usually not worth it. Put money into SEO fundamentals, useful customer-facing content and accurate business listings, and pay for specialist help once those are in place and you can see leads coming from the work. ChatGPT added that many AEO services are SEO and content strategy under a newer name, and flagged that as its own inference. It also cited Google's guidance that third-party services promising AI gains cannot guarantee them.
We sell this work and we think they are mostly right.
What to do first, in order
- Make sure the site can be crawled and indexed. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search, do not block OpenAI's search crawler in
robots.txt. OpenAI's publisher FAQ explains it. - Write the pages buyers need. Service pages, pricing or process, and a real answer to each question people ask before they hire you.
- Put the answer in the first two sentences.
- Make the facts consistent across your site and the third-party profiles your buyers read.
- Check what the models say about you. Pick a fixed set of buyer questions and ask them every month. We describe the method in AI visibility: how to measure it.
When paying for help makes sense
- Your business depends on leads from search and the site has few pages that answer buying questions.
- You do not have the time to write and maintain them.
- You want the checking done and written up every month.
It makes less sense if the offer is a retainer with no deliverables you can name, or if anyone promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT or Google. Nobody controls that.
What we do and do not do
The answer engine optimization work is the list above, done inside your Webflow project: technical fixes, pages written to be quoted, and monthly checks of what the models answer. Results take time. Our own site says to expect movement in indexing and positions in 4 to 8 weeks and steady leads from month three or four, and that is a range, not a promise.
The part that costs us
If your site is thin or hard to crawl, the cheapest and most useful step is not AEO at all. It is the basics, and you can do some of them yourself. Our free audit tells you which category you are in, and if you only need the basics we will say so.
